Jen, I think we need the SciFi channel this year, for "THE MAN WITH THE SCREAMING BRAIN" and "ALIEN APOCALYPSE". (And Earthsea and Ringworld too, I guess.)

The description of this series really disturbs me:

UNTITLED JOEL SCHUMACHER/APRIL SMITH PROJECT: Described as SEX IN THE CITY meets V,

"They've come to steal our water!"
"Um, it doesn't look like she's after his water..."

They're doing a liveaction Witchhunter Robin?

Very strange. The only good thing about Witchhunter Robin was the soundtrack (which I loved). And the animation, at times, I suppose. It was fairly decent at estabilishing a mood... And it did amuse me that at times, you saw the anime character in the morning, before doing up their anime hair, looking normal.

But the plot was incredibly shallow, and the characters only occasionally progressed beyond two-dimensional. And since you really can't bring over animation when going to live action....

And, um, there's no secret about Robin being a witch. I mean, it's in the bleepin' opening credits. It's kindof part of the central premise. She's a witch raised by the vatican, with large doses of self-hatred and good old fashioned catholic guilt.

They say:

WITCHHUNTER ROBIN: Based on a Japanese anime, this series follows a group of trained cops that seek to capture witches. One of the newest cops, Robin, is secretly a witch herself and uses her powers to track down the evildoers. Producers Roy Lee and Doug Davison (THE RING) will executive produce.

Is it like Superman, where it's a secret to everyone else but the viewers know all about it? Either way, your description makes it sound like it fits in with "Monk", "Jake 2.0", "John Doe", and many more, so I can see it. (Or, at least, I can if we get cable. ;-)

Whatever happened to "John Doe" anyway? I see on the web that it's been cancelled, which I'd figured out by this point. I wonder what the big secret was going to turn out to be?

Nope, everyone knows. It's why she's there, in fact. You need a witch to catch the witches, and such.

The last witch to work with this team went "native" and got hunted down, and Robin is always at risk of that too. It's where a lot of the angst comes from; the team doesn't want to get used to/like the new witch, cuz last time they did that, bad things happened. And again, since Robin as a witch was raised by people who think witches are evil, lots of self-hate going on. It's your standard Lestat/Louis sort of thing.

All the rest of the angst comes from everyone having miserable lives. And the questions about whether the Watchers Council equivalent is good or evil. And stuff (which includes spoilers).

There's absolutely nothing _novel_ about this anime for anyone who has read anything in this sort of genre. It's decently executed for what it is, but every "surprise" and "plot twist" is telegraphed far, far in advance for anyone who knows how these things go.
