Thanks! My son had a 5th grade project to study a zoo animal, and picked flying foxes. We hadn't been to the zoo in a while, so it was a great excuse to go.

That prompted me to look up if foxes had been demoted from dogs to rats, as bats are generally known* to be flying rats. Yes, foxes are still dogs (canis family) — scientists have done no Pluto-is-not-a-planet number on them— but bats are neither dogs not rodents. Bats are in their own order under mammals and are considered closer to humans (order primates) than rodents.
