I hadn't heard of this book (mentioned here, here) by an "anonymous" current CIA agent who says he is/was head of the Osama bin Laden task force, so I don't know much of the background and if there's any controversy here. But listening to him talk on NPR, I like his consistency of metaphor. As best I can remember: "You can forgive policy makers for not knowing the history of Saudi Arabia, but you can't forgive them for not knowing their own history. Our efforts towards democracy started around 800 years ago at Runnymede [...] and we haven't perfected it yet. We can't just expect to ship some CD-ROMs to Iraq and expect them to install it over their own system."
