From the NYT, covering a story the Daily Show talked about two months ago:

Federal law prohibits the use of Federal money for "publicity or propaganda purposes" not authorized by Congress.

Why does this come up, you ask? Because the White House "distributed" a Medicare video which included a fake news story that many TV stations simply aired unadorned, as if it was theirs.

(This was apparently also a violation of the "Antideficiency Act". *boggle*)
