sandwich donut?

It was really late at night, but because of that, the girl behind the counter was bored and felt like explaining everything to us and giving us lots of samples. Apparently sweet potato is in vogue over there nowadays because you can make desserts with it that aren't as sugary as traditional; several times, she said a thing was popular right now because it was less sweet. Surprising.
Anyway, one of the things that caught our eye was called "sandwich donut". It was a little hard to tell what it was, but it looked like sweet red bean paste between layers of flaky pastry, cut triangularly to look like little sandwiches. So, sure, we figured we'd try some.
After eating it, we think we know what it really was. The red bean, that was right on, but we think they just took white bread, trimmed the crust off, make a red bean paste sandwich out of it, and then deep fried it. That wasn't some flaky pastry, that was greasy, heavily fried bread with sweet bean paste!
Brilliant!
(Though not necessarily something to repeat.)
